Speaker 1: we recommend you stop listening now.
Speaker 2: True crime with a dash of the paranormal, the garish,
Speaker 2: the strange in the darkly comic. I'm Zeven Odelberg, host
Speaker 2: of kind of Murdery, a podcast that's about more than
Speaker 2: just murder. It's my very own pocket dimension, home to
Speaker 2: a curated collection of bizarre and compelling stories, the unsolved,
Speaker 2: the unsettling, and the unbelievable. I cover it all just
Speaker 2: so long as it's kind of murdery. That's the truth.
Speaker 2: Just like it says in the intro, I am Zeven Odelberg,
Speaker 2: and this is kind of murdery. Hey, my friends, I
Speaker 2: am so glad you are here today. I always do
Speaker 2: appreciate it when you choose to spend time with me.
Speaker 2: It really never gets old. So today I am bringing
Speaker 2: you a humdinger of a mysterious story. I found it.
Speaker 2: The story I found in Vanity Fair, an article called
Speaker 2: The Vanishing Blonde, written by the incredible Mark Bowden. And interestingly,
Speaker 2: it features a real life private eye who we have
Speaker 2: featured before. That is Ken Brennan, if some of you
Speaker 2: will recall the episodes we did on the murder at
Speaker 2: the Hotel Elegante, a story which I also first came
Speaker 2: across in another fantastic article written by the amazing Mark Bowden.
Speaker 2: So if you want to read incredible true crime stories,
Speaker 2: look for just about anything written by Mark Bowden. My
Speaker 2: sources are in the show notes, and I'm not going
Speaker 2: to tell you much about it up front here because
Speaker 2: I'm pretty confident that this is a tale that's going
Speaker 2: to grab you right away. So now, if you are ready,
Speaker 2: please do join me as we uncover what truths we
Speaker 2: can and solve what mysteries we may. Kind of Murdery
Speaker 2: starts now. In the early hours of a chilly winter
Speaker 2: morning in two thousand five, a grim discovery marks the
Speaker 2: beginning of a perplexing case that would haunt the western
Speaker 2: edge of Miami. Amid the liminal space where the orderly
Speaker 2: outer suburbia surrenders to the wild embrace of the Everglades,
Speaker 2: with its towering grass and dark, unforgiving mud. A scene
Speaker 2: unfolds that seems almost too brutal. Two out of place,
Speaker 2: a local power company worker navigating through the routine of
Speaker 2: his day, drives by the desolate expanse of an unbuilt
Speaker 2: cul de sac. It's here, amidst the weeds and solitude
Speaker 2: that he spots something. A young woman only twenty one
Speaker 2: years old with long blonde curls lies faced down. She's naked,
Speaker 2: her body battered, an undeniable sign of the violence she endured.
Speaker 2: She's been discarded here at the very threshold of civilization
Speaker 2: and wilderness. The area, known for its neat grid of
Speaker 2: suburban life, now bears witness to a dark juxtaposition, the
Speaker 2: innocence of the landscape marred by the cruelty inflicted upon
Speaker 2: the woman. Much to the power company worker's surprise, the
Speaker 2: woman is still alive. Rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital by police,
Speaker 2: she lays unconscious, and then she is airlifted with all
Speaker 2: haste into the expert hands of those who could save her.
Speaker 2: Upon regaining consciousness in the trauma center, her memories of
Speaker 2: the events that led her to the edge of the
Speaker 2: Everglades were fragmented, obscured by the trauma she'd endured. Yet
Speaker 2: her body told a vivid, harrowing story of survival against
Speaker 2: a backdrop of unforgivable violence. She had been subjected to
Speaker 2: a savage assault, raped and beaten with such severity that
Speaker 2: it was miraculous she'd survived. The attackers had not spared her.
Speaker 2: Evidence of their violence was clear, and the severe head
Speaker 2: trauma she suffered with blows forceful enough to rattle her brain.
Speaker 2: Forensic analysis confirmed the assault, with seamen recovered pointing towards
Speaker 2: a heinous act of sexual violence. Her physical injuries were extensive.
Speaker 2: The bones around her right eye were shattered. In the
Speaker 2: midst of her trauma and confusion, her linguistic struggle added
Speaker 2: another layer of complexity to her ordeal. Her accent and
Speaker 2: speech patterns, molded by her native Ukrainian made communication challenging.
Speaker 2: She dropped pronouns, inverted sentence structures. Her English was bent
Speaker 2: around the framework of her mother tongue, rendering her words
Speaker 2: difficult to decipher. Nevertheless, she managed to make one thing
Speaker 2: very clear. As soon as she awoke, the woman asked
Speaker 2: for a lawyer. It was an unusual request, one that
Speaker 2: hinted at a story that would veer far from that
Speaker 2: of ordinary sexual assault. Of course, we should all be
Speaker 2: horrified that there is such a thing as ordinary sexual assault.
Speaker 2: But nonetheless it was uncommon for a victim still in
Speaker 2: the hospital, still suffering horrific injuries, to ask for a lawyer,
Speaker 2: and whatever the woman's reasons, investigators immediately knew that the
Speaker 2: truth behind this case was likely to be an elusive
Speaker 2: and many layered thing. And indeed, as investigators began to
Speaker 2: peel back those very layers, the woman's fragmented memories and
Speaker 2: the physical evidence of her assault would serve as critical
Speaker 2: pieces in unraveling the mystery of exactly what had happened
Speaker 2: to her on that terrible winter morning, Miami Dade detectives
Speaker 2: discovered that the woman had been residing for several months
Speaker 2: at the Airport Regency Hotel, a mere eight miles from
Speaker 2: the desolate spot where she was discovered. The hotel, known
Speaker 2: for its crisp efficiency, was a favorite of business travelers
Speaker 2: navigating long haul flights. The woman was employed by a
Speaker 2: cruise ship line, and her long term stay at the
Speaker 2: hotel was the result of a severe finger injury she
Speaker 2: had sustained on the job. Her recovery was being overseen
Speaker 2: by her employers. As detectives delved deeper, piecing together her
Speaker 2: account of the events leading up to her discovery at
Speaker 2: the Ena, the edge of the Everglades, a bone chilling
Speaker 2: narrative emerged. The assault began in her hotel room on
Speaker 2: the fourth floor. Her attackers, she recalled, were two or
Speaker 2: three white men who spoke with what she perceived to
Speaker 2: be Hispanic accents, though she couldn't be sure. The terrible
Speaker 2: violence of the encounter was punctuated by moments that haunted
Speaker 2: her recovery. The stifling pressure of a pillow forced against
Speaker 2: her face, the bitter taste of the alcohol she was
Speaker 2: forced to consume, fragmented memories of being carried or dragged,
Speaker 2: the cold, physical and spiritual violation within the confines of
Speaker 2: a car's back seat, and her desperate please for mercy.
Speaker 2: These were vivid, traumatic flashes of memory, yet they yielded
Speaker 2: no substantial leads, no clear pathway to identifying her assailants.
Speaker 2: The case took an unexpected turn when the woman's lawyer
Speaker 2: filed a lawsuit against the hotel, citing negligence. The legal
Speaker 2: action sought to hold the establishment accountable, targeting the financial
Speaker 2: depths of its corporate structure. This move raised eyebrows among
Speaker 2: the detectives. The dynamics of the case began to shift,
Speaker 2: prompting them to consider alternative angles. Could there be more
Speaker 2: to the woman's story than met the eye. The typical
Speaker 2: profile of a rape victim seemed to miss align with
Speaker 2: the emerging details of her case. The possibility of a
Speaker 2: sophisticated scam loomed over the investigation, casting a shadow of
Speaker 2: doubt on what had initially appeared to be a straightforward
Speaker 2: case of brutal assault. As the detectives navigated through the
Speaker 2: murky waters of the case, the line between victim and
Speaker 2: participant blurred, challenging their perceptions and compelling them to look
Speaker 2: beyond the surface of the woman's harrowing ordeal. In the
Speaker 2: wake of her brutal assault, Miami Dade Police detectives embarked
Speaker 2: on a meticulous investigation of the Airport Regency Hotel's grounds,
Speaker 2: inside and outside the hotel, the place she had called
Speaker 2: home in the months leading up to the incident. They
Speaker 2: scoured her room for any sign of evidence, conducted interviews
Speaker 2: with hotel staff, and sifted through hours of service Balen's
Speaker 2: footage from the morning of the attack. The detectives also
Speaker 2: scrutinized the guest list, a daunting task given the hotels
Speaker 2: one hundred and seventy four rooms and the transient nature
Speaker 2: of its clientele. However, the sheer volume of the guests
Speaker 2: and the limited resources of a police department stretched thin
Speaker 2: by the demands of a high crime area meant that
Speaker 2: running comprehensive checks on each individual was an impractical, if
Speaker 2: not practically impossible endeavor. As days turned into weeks, the
Speaker 2: investigation found itself mired in a standstill. The sex crimes unit,
Speaker 2: despite their efforts, hit a wall. The absence of clear
Speaker 2: leads or actionable intelligence left them with a case that
Speaker 2: was as perplexing as it was frustrating. Detective Alan Foot,
Speaker 2: who spearheaded the investigation, summed up their predicament with a
Speaker 2: sense of defeat, noticing that their avenues for progress had
Speaker 2: quote dried up. The physical evidence of the assault was
Speaker 2: undeniable and disturbing. The woman had sustained severe head trauma,
Speaker 2: the kind that leaves lasting scars both physical and psychological,
Speaker 2: right was surrounded by shattered bones. Yet with the criminal
Speaker 2: investigation stalled, the pursuit of justice shifted gears, moving from
Speaker 2: the police department's jurisdiction to the civil courts. The hotel
Speaker 2: faced with a lawsuit alleging negligence on their part geared
Speaker 2: up for a legal battle. In a strategic move to
Speaker 2: bolster their defense, the law firm representing the hotel enlisted
Speaker 2: the services of Can Brennan, a private detective. Brennan was
Speaker 2: tasked with a formidable challenge to unravel the mystery that
Speaker 2: so far eluded the police, to piece together the events
Speaker 2: of that fateful morning, and to uncover the truth behind
Speaker 2: the violent assault that had taken place under the roof
Speaker 2: of the Airport Regency Hotel. Detective Allan Foot's initial reaction
Speaker 2: to Can Brennan's involvement was unsurprisingly less than enthusiastic. The
Speaker 2: integration of a private detective into an ongoing case often
Speaker 2: meant unwelcome complications, and Brennan, with his striking presence, was
Speaker 2: no exception. Embodying the quintessential image of a private investigator,
Speaker 2: Brennan was a figure that could easily dominate any ris.
Speaker 2: Middle Aged and deeply tanned, his gray hair and muscular
Speaker 2: physique were complimented by his choice of attire, open necked
Speaker 2: shirts that subtly showcased his strength and a bright, solid
Speaker 2: gold chain that hinted at a life well lived. His
Speaker 2: appearance projected an aura of maturity vitality and success, elements
Speaker 2: that did define both his personal and professional life. Brennan's
Speaker 2: background was as colorful as his personality. He was a
Speaker 2: former cop from Long Island who also boasted experience as
Speaker 2: a dea agent, a role he left in the mid
Speaker 2: nineties to explore new ventures, including commodities brokering and private investigation.
Speaker 2: It was the latter that captured his interest and suited
Speaker 2: his talents. Brennan was known for his warm demeanor and quick,
Speaker 2: accurate assessments of those he encountered, coupled with an unmistakable
Speaker 2: Long Island accent and a straightforward New York attitude. His
Speaker 2: approach to relationships was simple. If he liked you, you'd
Speaker 2: knew it immediately and a long lasting friendship would ensue.
Speaker 2: If not, you'd be equally aware of where you stood.
Speaker 2: Despite his open, engaging personality, Brennan was not one to
Speaker 2: be easily shocked or enticed by the typical fare that
Speaker 2: fills the days of many private detectives. Domestic dispute and
Speaker 2: minor insurance fraud held little interest for him, leading him
Speaker 2: to decline them in favor of more challenging assignments. His
Speaker 2: clientele mainly consisted of businesses and law firms in need
Speaker 2: of someone with a particular skill set to uncover the
Speaker 2: truth in complex civil court cases. This case, with its
Speaker 2: layers of mystery and lack of clear leads, was exactly
Speaker 2: the type of challenge Brennan thrived on as he stepped
Speaker 2: into the fray. His involvement promised to inject new energy
Speaker 2: and perspective into the investigation, potentially steering it in directions
Speaker 2: that the police had not yet explored. Ken Brennan approached
Speaker 2: his work with a principle that set him apart in
Speaker 2: the murky waters of private investigation. His pledge to potential
Speaker 2: clients was unwavering and clear cut. He would commit only
Speaker 2: to uncovering the truth, undistorted by any desire to manipulate
Speaker 2: outcomes in favor of his clients. This integrity was the
Speaker 2: cornerstone of his practice. While the positive impact of his
Speaker 2: findings on clients cases was always welcome, it was never
Speaker 2: his primary motive. Brennan was not in the business of
Speaker 2: strategically winning lawsuits. He was driven by the allure of
Speaker 2: the unknown, the intellectual challenge of piecing together puzzles that
Speaker 2: seemed inscrutable to others. The task at hand in this
Speaker 2: particular investigation was anything but mundane. Brennan was charged with
Speaker 2: untangling the webs surrounding the violent assault of a young woman,
Speaker 2: a case that had left season detective stumped and without leads.
Speaker 2: The questions that needed answers were foundational yet perplexing. Had
Speaker 2: the brutal attack occurred within the hotel or had the
Speaker 2: victim encountered her attacker or attackers elsewhere? What was the
Speaker 2: true nature of the victim's situation. Was she merely an
Speaker 2: innocent cotton a vicious cycle, or was her story intertwined
Speaker 2: with the operations of an Eastern European criminal syndicate. The
Speaker 2: possibility of her involvement in prostitution or being implicated in
Speaker 2: some other manner added layers of confusion and complexity to
Speaker 2: the investigation. Brennan faced a labyrinth of possibilities, each hypothesis
Speaker 2: branching into myriad questions, each as critical as it was challenging.
Speaker 2: The lack of definitive answers and the abundance of speculation
Speaker 2: only served to deepen the intrigue of the case. For Brennan.
Speaker 2: His task was not simply to find the perpetrators, but
Speaker 2: to navigate through the fog of uncertainty and misinformation to
Speaker 2: uncover the reality of what had transpired. This was a
Speaker 2: mystery that promised to test his skills and determination, a
Speaker 2: challenge that Brennan was all too eager to accept. When
Speaker 2: Ken Brennan made his introduction to Detective Allan Foot of
Speaker 2: the Miami Dade Police Sex Crimes Unit, he did so
Speaker 2: with the straightforwardness that comes from shared experience. He believed
Speaker 2: he'd found a kindred spirit in Foot. I used to
Speaker 2: be a cop and a federal agent, Brennan declared, not
Speaker 2: just as an introduction, but as a statement of credibility.
Speaker 2: Foot sizing up, Brennan found himself face to face with
Speaker 2: someone who not only shared his world, but also brought
Speaker 2: an outside perspective that could prove in valielluable. Brennan wasted
Speaker 2: no time in laying out his philosophy, a mix of
Speaker 2: blunt honesty and professional insight. Look, you and I both
Speaker 2: know there's no fucking way you can investigate this case,
Speaker 2: Brennan asserted. His words, far from dismissive, carried a weight
Speaker 2: of understanding, acknowledging the harsh realities of resource constraints and
Speaker 2: the complexities of the investigation. I can see this through
Speaker 2: to the end. I won't step on you, Dick. I
Speaker 2: won't do anything without telling you about it. If I
Speaker 2: figure out who did it, you get the arrest. I
Speaker 2: won't do anything to fuck it up for you. This proposition,
Speaker 2: forthright and devoid of any pretense, resonated with Foot. Here
Speaker 2: was Brennan not just offering to lend his expertise, but
Speaker 2: pledging to navigate the intricacies of the case with respect
Speaker 2: for the detective's role and the police investigation's integrity. Foot,
Speaker 2: confronted with an offer that broke from the usual solitary
Speaker 2: confines of his police work, made an uncharacteristic decision. He
Speaker 2: shared the contents of his file with Brennan, crime scene photos,
Speaker 2: surveillance footage, and the victims fragmented, confused statement interviews with
Speaker 2: the hotel staff. I had led nowhere. They hadn't seen anything,
Speaker 2: and Foot had hit a dead end handing over the information.
Speaker 2: Foot's gesture was one of tacit collaboration, driven perhaps by
Speaker 2: a sense of desperation, but also by a recognition of
Speaker 2: Brennan's potential to make a breakthrough good luck, he thought
Speaker 2: a silent acknowledgment of the daunting task ahead, but also
Speaker 2: a nod to the possibility that Brennan, with his unique
Speaker 2: blend of experience, determination and straightforwardness, might just unravel the
Speaker 2: mystery that had eluded the police. As Ken Brennan delve
Speaker 2: deeper into the case, the previous efforts of an insurance
Speaker 2: adjuster caught his attention. By November two thousand and five,
Speaker 2: eight months since the woman was discovered, the adjuster had
Speaker 2: compiled a detailed summary that Brennan now reviewed with a
Speaker 2: critical eye. The victim's recollections were fragmented and inconsistent, complicating
Speaker 2: the narrative. Initially, she reported a single assailant, but this
Speaker 2: number fluctuated to three, then two, and her description of
Speaker 2: their accents shifted from Hispanic to possibly Romanian. These inconsistencies,
Speaker 2: combined with the lack of concrete evidence, had stymied any
Speaker 2: progress in implicating a suspect. The security infrastructure of the
Speaker 2: Airport Regency hotel where the victim had been staying, presented
Speaker 2: another significant challenge to the solving of the case. The
Speaker 2: property was well protected, surrounded by fencing with locked and
Speaker 2: monitored back gates. Egress was limited to a few points,
Speaker 2: all under strict surveillance. At night, access was further restricted.
Speaker 2: The back door locked, requiring remote opening. Two security guards
Speaker 2: were stationed around the clock, their watchful eyes complemented by
Speaker 2: an array of surveillance cameras covering every potential point of
Speaker 2: injury and exit the front entrance, the back, the lobby,
Speaker 2: the elevator leading from the lobby, and additional areas like
Speaker 2: the pool and parking lot. Moreover, the hotel employed a
Speaker 2: digital key card system for room access, generating a precise
Speaker 2: computer record of each jury and exit. This system theoretically
Speaker 2: enabled the tracking of every guest's movements, offering a potential
Speaker 2: treasure trove of data for someone trying to piece together
Speaker 2: the events of that fateful night. Brennan now faced a
Speaker 2: daunting task. The security measures that should have safeguarded the
Speaker 2: hotel's guests now obscured the sequence of events leading to
Speaker 2: the victim's assault. Each piece of evidence, from the victim's
Speaker 2: fragmented memories to the extensive surveillance footage, seemed to complicate
Speaker 2: the puzzle rather than bring clarity. Yet, for Brennan, these
Speaker 2: obstacles were not deterrence, but challenges to be overcome with
Speaker 2: meticulous attention to detail and a refusal to be swayed
Speaker 2: by dead ends. He was determined to navigate through the
Speaker 2: maze of contradictions and security protocols to uncover the truth.
Speaker 2: Ken Brennan embarked on his investigation with the fundamental question
Speaker 2: that drives all detective work. What did he know for sure?
Speaker 2: He had concrete knowledge that the victim had ascended to
Speaker 2: her room on the fourth floor of the Airport Regency
Speaker 2: Hotel at three forty one a m utilizing her key
Speaker 2: card for injury almost simultaneously, and by dawn she was
Speaker 2: found in the weeds eight miles west of her last
Speaker 2: known location. The mystery centered then on how within this
Speaker 2: approximate three hour window she had managed to leave the
Speaker 2: hotel without any camera evidence capturing her departure. The hotel's
Speaker 2: surveillance system had thoroughly documented the victim's movements throughout the night,
Speaker 2: her bright red puffy jacket and shoulder length blonde curls
Speaker 2: making her a distinct figure against the hotel's backdrop. Her
Speaker 2: restlessness was evident after months of residing at the hotel.
Speaker 2: She frequented the lobby, engaging with staff and guests, stepping
Speaker 2: out for smoke brakes, her movements captured by the vigilant
Speaker 2: eyes of the security cameras. Her night was punctuated by outings,
Speaker 2: including dinner with a friend, returning around midnight, only to
Speaker 2: leave again around three in the morning. The front entrance
Speaker 2: camera recorded her departure in subsequent return following a brief
Speaker 2: trip to a nearby gas station to purchase a phone
Speaker 2: card for a call to her mother in the Ukraine.
Speaker 2: Her re entry into the hotel and her final elevator
Speaker 2: ride upstairs were crucial moments. Notably, a large black man
Speaker 2: entered the elevator with her, engaging in a brief exchange
Speaker 2: captured by the camera. There was a twenty minute gap
Speaker 2: between her entering the elevator and using her key card
Speaker 2: to enter her room, which sparked much speculation, but Brennan
Speaker 2: discovered that the discrepancy was due to the elevator camera's
Speaker 2: clock being out of sync with the computer system tracking
Speaker 2: key card usage. This detail clarified the victim's movements up
Speaker 2: until she entered her room, but beyond that the surveillance
Speaker 2: offered no further insights. Brennan's focus sharpened on the mystery
Speaker 2: of her departure from the hotel. Given the comprehensive coverage
Speaker 2: of the hotel's cameras, the absence of footage showing her
Speaker 2: exit raised questions. Brennan's meticulous review of the surveillance footage
Speaker 2: and the timing discrepancy provided a foundation upon which to
Speaker 2: build his conclusions. With the victim's movements accounted for within
Speaker 2: the hotel, the challenge lay in piecing together how she
Speaker 2: left the premises undetected. Ken Brennan's investigation took him into
Speaker 2: the heart of the mystery. How had the victim left
Speaker 2: the Airport Regency Hotel without a trace on the surveillance cameras.
Speaker 2: The hotel's security system, reliant on motion detectors to a
Speaker 2: activate the cameras, had proven infallible against attempts by the
Speaker 2: Miami Dade detectives to evade detection. Despite their efforts to
Speaker 2: move slowly or from angles they hoped the cameras would
Speaker 2: not cover, the system captured their every move without fail.
Speaker 2: One working hypothesis that the victim may have exited through
Speaker 2: her fourth floor window was meticulously considered and then ultimately dismissed.
Speaker 2: The logistics of lowering an unconscious person from such a
Speaker 2: height without leaving signs of injury on the victim or
Speaker 2: disturbance in the bushes below, defied logic. Even without these
Speaker 2: obvious concerns in regard to the feasibility of this scenario,
Speaker 2: Brennan still found it highly improbable. Acknowledging that sex crimes
Speaker 2: are seldom, if ever, executed with such elaborate coordination and equipment.
Speaker 2: Driven by the conviction that the solution must lay within
Speaker 2: the bounds of the ordinary, Brennan turned his attention back
Speaker 2: to the more plausible route of exit, the elevator to
Speaker 2: the lobby and out through the front door. This path,
Speaker 2: however ordinarya it seemed, presented its own set of challenges
Speaker 2: given the victim's absence from the video record during her
Speaker 2: supposed exit. The case summary by the insurance adjuster underscored
Speaker 2: the mystery, saying, quote needless to say, the big mystery
Speaker 2: here is how this woman got out of the hotel unquote.
Speaker 2: It was a mystery that until now remained unsolved. In
Speaker 2: a moment of insight, Brennan considered a new angle disguise.
Speaker 2: This single word penciled onto a memo opened up a
Speaker 2: new line of inquiry. The premise was simple, yet potentially groundbreaking.
Speaker 2: If the victim had disguised herself or been disguised by
Speaker 2: someone else, it would explain her undetected departure through the
Speaker 2: hotel's surveilled exits. This theory required a thorough re examination
Speaker 2: of the surveillance footage, so Brennan went through it again
Speaker 2: with a keen eye for any details previously overlooked or
Speaker 2: any figures who might not have been given a second glance.
Speaker 2: Ken Brennan's meticulous re examination of the hotel's video surveillance
Speaker 2: transformed into an exhaustive audit of every individual's movements within
Speaker 2: the hotel's confines. His methodical approach involved tracing the journey
Speaker 2: of each person or group from their entrants as captured
Speaker 2: by the camera over the front door, through their progression
Speaker 2: into the lobby, and finally their approach to the elevator.
Speaker 2: The digital breadcrumbs left by the use of room keys
Speaker 2: corroborated these visual records, mapping each guest's injury into their
Speaker 2: respective rooms. A similar reverse sequence accounted for departures, with
Speaker 2: the addition of the parking lot cameras tracking the comings
Speaker 2: and goings of vehicles. Through this relentless scrutiny, Brennan methodically
Speaker 2: narrowed down the list of potential suspects. Criteria for elimination
Speaker 2: were strict and straightforward. Anyone leaving the hotel before the
Speaker 2: victim's last known injury without returning was discounted as a
Speaker 2: possible assailant. Similarly, guests who entered but were not recorded leaving,
Speaker 2: as well as those departing without luggage or with only
Speaker 2: a small bag, were also ruled out. No one was
Speaker 2: exempt from suspicion based on appearance alone. Brennan's keen eye
Speaker 2: also searched for any signs of nervousness or erratic behavior
Speaker 2: that might indicate guilt. This rigorous elimination process ultimately pinpointed
Speaker 2: a singular figure of interest, a very large black man
Speaker 2: with glasses, seen entering the elevator with the victim at
Speaker 2: three forty one am. His stature was imposing, standing at
Speaker 2: least six feet four inches tall and weighing over three
Speaker 2: hundred pounds. The casual exchange between him and the woman
Speaker 2: as they entered the elevator suggested an initial absence of distress. However,
Speaker 2: it was his actions after emerging from the elevator into
Speaker 2: the lobby at five twenty eight am, less than two
Speaker 2: hours later that aroused suspicion. The surveillance footage showed him
Speaker 2: nonchalantly pulling a suitcase with wheels, an item he did
Speaker 2: not possess upon his earlier entry. His departure through the
Speaker 2: front door suitcase in tow, was captured with the same
Speaker 2: casual demeanor. Yet the man's return to the hotel conspicuously
Speaker 2: without the suitcase before dawn raised alarming questions. His re
Speaker 2: entry into the elevator to ascend to the upper floors
Speaker 2: of the hotel was the last piece of visual evidence captured.
Speaker 2: Brennan's focus on this indie visual was not just due
Speaker 2: to his proximity to the victim in the elevator, but
Speaker 2: was reinforced by the sequence of his movements thereafter, particularly
Speaker 2: the mysterious appearance and disappearance of the suitcase. The peculiar
Speaker 2: behavior of the large man hauling a suitcase out of
Speaker 2: the hotel early in the morning, only to return without
Speaker 2: it within the hour sparked a critical realization for Ken Brennan.
Speaker 2: Coupling this observation with his thorough process of elimination, Brennan
Speaker 2: deduced that the victim must have been transported out of
Speaker 2: the hotel concealed within the man's luggage. Initially, the size
Speaker 2: of the suitcase seemed too compact, resembling those typically stored
Speaker 2: in airplane overhead compartments, but this was a deceptive appearance
Speaker 2: given the man's considerable size, Brennan was determined to quantify
Speaker 2: his hypothesis. He meticulously analyzed the surveillance footage, comparing the
Speaker 2: suitcase's dimension against fixed points in the video, such as
Speaker 2: the number of tiles had passed and the height of
Speaker 2: a bar inside the elevator. By obtaining a suitcase masp
Speaker 2: these calculated dimensions a suitcase that was significantly larger than
Speaker 2: it initially appeared on camera, Brennan conducted a stomach churning experiment.
Speaker 2: A flexible young woman mirroring the victim's size, was in
Speaker 2: fact able to fit inside the suitcase, confirming the plausibility,
Speaker 2: or at least executability, of his theory. Further scrutiny of
Speaker 2: the footage revealed a subtle yet telling detail. As the
Speaker 2: man exited the elevator, the suitcase's wheels momentarily snagged on
Speaker 2: the gap between the elevator floor and the lobby. The
Speaker 2: man had to tug slightly to free his luggage. This
Speaker 2: seemingly insignificant moment, easily overlooked by most, revealed something absolutely crucial.
Speaker 2: The suitcase would have to be heavy to get stuck
Speaker 2: like that. A chill ran down Brennan's spine as he
Speaker 2: suddenly realized the truth about his suspect. It was the
Speaker 2: man's demeanor throughout the sequence of events, calmly interacting with
Speaker 2: the victim, effortly navigating the hotel with the Leyden suitcase,
Speaker 2: and casually returning without it. All of this belied the
Speaker 2: horrifying nature and danger inherent to the crime that Brennan
Speaker 2: suspected the man was committing. His composed behavior was starkly
Speaker 2: at odds with the typical disarray observed in individuals involved
Speaker 2: in violent crimes. Brennan, drawing on his extensive experience in
Speaker 2: law enforcement, recognized a chilling proficiency in the suspect's actions.
Speaker 2: The suspect's ability to carry out such a heinous act
Speaker 2: and return to the scene with apparent indifference suggested a
Speaker 2: terrifying level of experience. This man had done this horrible
Speaker 2: thing before. On November seventeen, two thousand and five, Ken
Speaker 2: Brennan orchestrated a crucial meeting at the hotel, gathering the
Speaker 2: executives who had hired him, the hotel owners, insurance adjusters,
Speaker 2: and lawyers. The boardroom, typically a setting for financial deliberations
Speaker 2: in strategic planning, transformed into the stage where Brennan would
Speaker 2: unveil the sinister narrative that had unfolded under their roof.
Speaker 2: Brennan displayed on a laptop screen the pivotal image that
Speaker 2: had guided him to his current conclusions. The large man
Speaker 2: maneuvering his suitcase off the elevator. This is the guy
Speaker 2: that did it. That girls inside the suitcase, Brennan asserted
Speaker 2: with confidence. The reaction was immediate, but not the one
Speaker 2: Brennan had hoped for. Skepticism permeated the room, evidenced by
Speaker 2: snickers and incredulous glances. They were acting like he was crazy.
Speaker 2: How'd you come up with that, someone asked. Undeterred, Brennan
Speaker 2: laid out his methodical approach, detailing the exhaustive process of
Speaker 2: elimination that had narrowed the field of suspects to this
Speaker 2: single individual. Despite his meticulous explanation, the skepticism persisted, compounded
Speaker 2: by the victim's account. Didn't the victim say that she
Speaker 2: was attacked by two white guys? Someone else? Questioned Brennan
Speaker 2: steadfast and his conviction countered. I'm telling you this is
Speaker 2: the guy. Let me run with it a bit. If
Speaker 2: you're willing to give me the resources, I'll track this
Speaker 2: guy down. He framed his request as a mutually benefit
Speaker 2: official proposition, emphasizing the potential to significantly mitigate the hotel's
Speaker 2: liability in the ongoing civil suit by proving the assailant
Speaker 2: was not an employee. What could be better, he argued,
Speaker 2: envisioning the positive implications of apprehending the true perpetrator. Think
Speaker 2: how good you guys will look if we actually catch
Speaker 2: the guy responsible. You'd be solving a horrible crime. Yet
Speaker 2: the room remained largely unconvinced, their skepticism a tangible barrier
Speaker 2: to Brennan's plea for further support. In a final bid
Speaker 2: to sway them, Brennan highlighted the suspect's demeanor. Look At
Speaker 2: how cool this guy is, he urged, replaying the footage
Speaker 2: He just raped and beat a woman to death, or
Speaker 2: he thinks he has, and it's not like he's nervous
Speaker 2: and jittery at all. He's cool as a clam. Now
Speaker 2: you tell me the kind of person who could do
Speaker 2: this kind of thing and be this nonchalant, Well, I'll
Speaker 2: tell you what it means. It means it ain't the
Speaker 2: only time he's done this. The boardroom, which up until
Speaker 2: that point had been a scene of pivotal confrontation between
Speaker 2: ken Brennan's conviction and the stakeholder's skepticism, shifted then into
Speaker 2: a space of negotiation calculation. The discussion that unfolded was
Speaker 2: not merely about the pursuit of justice or the unraveling
Speaker 2: of a heinous crime. It became a deliberation of costs
Speaker 2: versus benefit, a stark, heartless business calculation at the core
Speaker 2: of which lay Brennan's fee juxtaposed against the potential to
Speaker 2: mitigate the hotel's legal and financial vulnerabilities. Despite the varied
Speaker 2: motivations in the room, Brennan remained singularly focused. His interest
Speaker 2: was not in the why behind their eventual decision. It
Speaker 2: was the continuation of the investigation that mattered to him.
Speaker 2: The awakening of old instincts, a deep seated drive for justice,
Speaker 2: propelled him forward. Brennan had not personally met the victim,
Speaker 2: yet the proximity to solving her case, to pinpointing her
Speaker 2: assailant ignited a fervent determination within him. The attacker, roaming
Speaker 2: free nearly a year after the crime, unaware of the
Speaker 2: tightening net, represented more than just a suspect to Brennan.
Speaker 2: He embodied the elusive adversary all detectives yearned to confront,
Speaker 2: the moment of rev the gatcha that validates the painstaking
Speaker 2: journey of investigation. The hotel's decision, hanging in the balance,
Speaker 2: ultimately tipped in Brennan's favor. Management, albeit reluctantly, granted him
Speaker 2: the green light to proceed. Brennan, bolstered by a slim
Speaker 2: margin of support, felt an even greater urgency to validate
Speaker 2: his theory, to vindicate his approach, and above all, to
Speaker 2: capture the man who he believed had eluded justice. The
Speaker 2: challenge of convincing the stakeholders had only intensified Brennan's resolve.
Speaker 2: With renewed determination, he set out to follow the trail
Speaker 2: that he hoped would lead to the moment of capture,
Speaker 2: to the unveiling of the truth, and to the delivery
Speaker 2: of long awaited justice for the victim. The hotel records
Speaker 2: offered no assistance in the investigation. The sheer number of rooms,
Speaker 2: combined with the constant flow of guests, rendered a detailed
Speaker 2: examination of every individual who passed through its doors and
Speaker 2: impractice task. Furthermore, the memory of the hotel staff failed
Speaker 2: to provide any leads. A three hundred pound black man
Speaker 2: with glasses did not stand out in their recollections, leaving
Speaker 2: uncertain whether he was a registered guest, a visitor, or
Speaker 2: possibly sharing accommodations with another guest. The practice of photocopying
Speaker 2: guests driver's licenses was inconsistently applied and proved feudile as well.
Speaker 2: The resulting images were often too blurry to discern any
Speaker 2: useful details or faces. Returning to the surveillance footage with
Speaker 2: a clearer focus, Brennan delved into the task of meticulously
Speaker 2: tracking every movement of the man he now considered his
Speaker 2: primary suspect. This individual's presence was noted in various locations
Speaker 2: within the hotel premises, near the elevator, the lobby, the restaurant,
Speaker 2: and the entrance. During one of these recorded moments by
Speaker 2: the elevator, Brennan observed the suspect was in the company
Speaker 2: of a fit black man, distinguishable by a white T
Speaker 2: shirt adorned with the word Mercury. Initially, the reference seemed
Speaker 2: cryptic to Brennan, invoking thoughts of the automobile manufactur for
Speaker 2: the celestial body or the chemical element, yet offering no
Speaker 2: clear lead or relevance in the case. The interaction captured
Speaker 2: on video did suggest a familiarity between the two men,
Speaker 2: hinting at a possible personal connection or business partnership. Their
Speaker 2: path led them toward the hotel's restaurant, a direction confirmed
Speaker 2: by subsequent surveillance footage from within the dining area. Brennan
Speaker 2: observed the two men associating repeatedly in the video records,
Speaker 2: which raised his suspicion that they were collaborators, perhaps even
Speaker 2: visiting the town together. The men in the Mercury T
Speaker 2: shirt bore an ID tag, but its details were frustratingly
Speaker 2: indiscernible on the video screen due to its size. In
Speaker 2: pursuit of a breakthrough, Brennan reached out to NASA, hoping
Speaker 2: for technological intervention that could enhance the image, but NASA's
Speaker 2: response was disheartening. The limitations of the camera equipment used
Speaker 2: in the hotel's surveillance system, thwarted any hopes of clarifying
Speaker 2: the id tag's details. Faced with this technological impasse, Brennan
Speaker 2: was left to reckon with the realities of the investigation's constraints.
Speaker 2: His knack and conclusion that the victim's exit must have
Speaker 2: been through the hotel's main thoroughfare loomed larger than ever,
Speaker 2: underscoring the need to piece together the sequence of events
Speaker 2: without the aid of enhanced visual evidence. Diving back into
Speaker 2: the surveillance footage once more, Brennan's attention zeroed in on
Speaker 2: a particularly revealing moment captured within the restaurant. The man
Speaker 2: in the white T shirt, previously a figure of interest
Speaker 2: primarily for the word mercury emblazoned on the front, now
Speaker 2: offered a new clue. A brief fortuitous movement as he
Speaker 2: sidestepped another patron momentarily exposing the back of the T
Speaker 2: shirt to the camera, presenting Brennan with a fleeting opportunity
Speaker 2: to glean more information. Despite the challenge of deciphering the
Speaker 2: blurry text, the akin to us squinting in an eye
Speaker 2: chart with inadequate glasses, Brennan discerned the letters V and O,
Speaker 2: bookending a blurry script in the middle. His best guess
Speaker 2: at the word was Verado, a term unfamiliar to him
Speaker 2: but promising a potential lead. Turning to Google for insight
Speaker 2: and discovered that Verado was not without significance. It was,
Speaker 2: in fact the name of a new outboard engine by
Speaker 2: Mercury Marine, a manufacturer known for its boating engines. This
Speaker 2: gave context to the T shirts branding and also situated
Speaker 2: the men within the larger event. Brennan knew that Miami
Speaker 2: hosted a significant boat show in February, coinciding with the
Speaker 2: time of the incident. Brennan considered the possibility that the
Speaker 2: man in the Mercury T shirt and by extension, his
Speaker 2: larger associate, might have been in town for the boat
Speaker 2: show and potentially even work for Mercury Marine. This connection,
Speaker 2: though speculative, offered a tangible lead. It created a time
Speaker 2: frame and specific context for these suspects, and if the
Speaker 2: boat show was the backdrop that explained their presence in Miami,
Speaker 2: it could perhaps be a pathway to uncovering their identities.
Speaker 2: Brennan reached out to Alan Sperling, the head of security
Speaker 2: at Brunswick corporation, parent company of Mercury Marine. He speculated
Speaker 2: that if Mercury Marine had lodged its boat show employees
Speaker 2: at the Airport Regency, he may finally uncover the identities
Speaker 2: of the two men, or at least the man in
Speaker 2: the Mercury T shirt. However, Spurling quickly dashed water on
Speaker 2: this new hope, conveying to Brennan that Mercury Marine's employees
Speaker 2: stayed at a different hotel and none of the booth
Speaker 2: setup crews were at the Regency either. Next, Brennan inquired
Speaker 2: about the distribution of the T shirts, pinpointing them to
Speaker 2: the boat show's food court. This shifted his focus to
Speaker 2: center Plate, the company responsible for food services at the
Speaker 2: boat show, known for managing concessions at large events nationwide.
Speaker 2: Upon contacting Centerplate's human resources, Brennan learned that while the
Speaker 2: company did house some staff at the Regency for the
Speaker 2: boat show, identifying a specific individual among the two hundred
Speaker 2: plus hired for the event posed a significant challenge. Brennan's approach,
Speaker 2: focusing on the standout physical characteristics of the suspect, underscored
Speaker 2: his determination to find a needle in a haystack. Despite
Speaker 2: the vast number of potential leads. His inquiry aimed to
Speaker 2: leverage human memory and observation in the hopes that someone
Speaker 2: would recall a very large black man weighing at least
Speaker 2: three hundred pounds and wearing glasses. If somebody, anybody remembered him,
Speaker 2: that could be a huge break in the investigation, and
Speaker 2: the break finally did come a week after Brennan's inquiry
Speaker 2: into Centerplate, Albeit with its own set of challenges, the
Speaker 2: contact at Centerplate delivered hopeful news. Some employees did recall
Speaker 2: the presence of a noticeably large black man wearing glasses
Speaker 2: during the boat show, but none of them could remember
Speaker 2: his name, and so an essential piece of the puzzle.
Speaker 2: The identity of Brennan's suspect remained elusive, but the trail
Speaker 2: didn't end there. A glimmer of a lead emerged when
Speaker 2: it was mentioned that the man had originally been recruited
Speaker 2: to work at Zephyr Field in Metai, home to the
Speaker 2: New Orleans Zephyr's, a minor league baseball team Triple A
Speaker 2: affiliate of the Miami Marlins that has since been renamed
Speaker 2: the New Orleans Baby Cakes. But just the city of
Speaker 2: New Orleans was something. It was a tangible link, a
Speaker 2: potential point for Brennan to start delving deeper into the
Speaker 2: man's background and whereabouts. However, this lead was immediately overshadowed
Speaker 2: by a truly daunting obstacle. Hurricane Katrina's impact on New
Speaker 2: Orleans and its suburbs, including Metaie, had been catastrophic. The
Speaker 2: disaster had uprooted communities, displacing residents and disrupting lives, leaving
Speaker 2: Metai much like the rest of the affected area, in disarray.
Speaker 2: The aftermath of the hurricane meant that tracking down individuals,
Speaker 2: especially those like the mysterious man, people who might have
Speaker 2: been transient workers or displaced by the storm, would be
Speaker 2: a herculean task. The community, once tightly knit, had been dispersed,
Speaker 2: complicating Brennan's pursuit further, Ken Brennan's determination had become more
Speaker 2: than just a professional commitment, it was a personal crusade.
Speaker 2: As the investigation dragged on, with countless hours invested far
Speaker 2: beyond any financial compensation, ben instead alone in his relentless
Speaker 2: pursuit of justice for a woman whose life had been
Speaker 2: violently disrupted. The underlying motive of the hotel's insurers to
Speaker 2: shift the narrative towards the victim's supposed lifestyle choices in
Speaker 2: order to absolve themselves of liability was a path that
Speaker 2: Brennan refused to tread. Ken Brennan had only one true north.
Speaker 2: From the beginning, he had pledged allegiance to the truth,
Speaker 2: and only the truth, regardless of where it led or
Speaker 2: whom it implicated. Detective Foot, though he had provided Brennan
Speaker 2: with all available information, harbored doubts about the viability of
Speaker 2: the investigation with a caseload of other incidents that offered
Speaker 2: more tangible leads and outcomes. Foot skepticism mirrored the broader
Speaker 2: disinterest that seemed to surround the case. Yet within Brennan's mind,
Speaker 2: the image of the suspect was vivid and constant, an
Speaker 2: imposing figure moving through life with an air of untouchable confidence.
Speaker 2: This mental portrait of the suspect casually interacting with potential
Speaker 2: victims while securing in the belief that his heinous acts
Speaker 2: were untraceable, fueled Brennan's resolve. The notion of the attacker,
Speaker 2: brazen and unrepentant, blending into the every day while hiding
Speaker 2: in plain sight, propelled Brennan forward. It was this compelling
Speaker 2: image and the desire to shatter the perpetrator's smug assurance
Speaker 2: of anonymity that drove him to push the limits of investigation,
Speaker 2: seeking justice in a case that had become far more
Speaker 2: than just another job. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina,
Speaker 2: Brennan found a ray of hope through a connection from
Speaker 2: his past, Captain Ernest Demma of the New Orleans Police Department.
Speaker 2: This wasn't just any acquaintance. Brennan had earned the nickname
Speaker 2: Batman from Dema years earlier during a vacation in the
Speaker 2: French Quarter, when Brennan spontaneously intervened to help Dema subdue
Speaker 2: a suspect that had violently broken free. The God broken
Speaker 2: away from me, Dema recalled, and out of nowhere, here
Speaker 2: comes this guy in a black jacket, flying down the sidewalk,
Speaker 2: who runs him down, tackles him, and held the guy
Speaker 2: until my men could subdue him. He was fantastic. Such
Speaker 2: acts of courage forged bonds that time and distance cannot erode.
Speaker 2: And when Brennan, now in pursuit of justice for a
Speaker 2: case that seemed to reach a dead end at every turn,
Speaker 2: reached out to Dema, the response was swift and unwavering.
Speaker 2: With New Orleans still reeling from the devastation of Katrina,
Speaker 2: Dema leveraged his resources for Brennan. He dispatched his sergeant
Speaker 2: to Zephyr Field. Despite the challenges the minor league baseball
Speaker 2: team faced in restoring the hurricane damaged facilities. This effort
Speaker 2: paid off when Dema delivered a crucial piece of information
Speaker 2: to Brennan. Good news is I know who this guy is. However,
Speaker 2: the revelation was tempered by reality. His name's Mike Jones.
Speaker 2: Now there's probably only a million of them, and he
Speaker 2: doesn't work there anymore, and nobody knows where he went.
Speaker 2: With the name Mike Jones in hand, Brennan dove into
Speaker 2: the records of the Regency Hotel and found a match.
Speaker 2: A guest named Michael Lee Jones had been there during
Speaker 2: the critical period, aligning with the timeline of the assault. However,
Speaker 2: the trail grew cold, with a canceled credit card at
Speaker 2: an outdated Virginia address, the only lead a phone number
Speaker 2: curiously looped back to Centerplate, the company that ran food
Speaker 2: services for the boat convention, not bringing Brennan any closer
Speaker 2: to finding Jones, but the trail was heating up. Knowing
Speaker 2: that Jones had moved on from Centerplate without a trace
Speaker 2: left a gnawing question Where'd he gone? Brennan surmised that
Speaker 2: jones method bold and systematics suggested a routine honed by repetition.
Speaker 2: The mobility afforded by his job with Centerplate as a
Speaker 2: convention food services worker, covering different cities and having his
Speaker 2: expenses covered seemed too ideal for someone with joones predatory
Speaker 2: patterns to abandon lightly. This line of thought propelled Brennan
Speaker 2: to consider where a person with Jones's specific set of
Speaker 2: skills and proclivities might find similar employment. Armed with Centerplate's
Speaker 2: list of main competitors, Brennan embarked on a meticulous process
Speaker 2: of elimination, contacting the HR departments of each company. Despite
Speaker 2: the string of dead ends, Brennan's persistence never wavered. His
Speaker 2: investigative journey took a promising turn when he discovered that
Speaker 2: one of the companies, Ovations, was based in Tampa, a
Speaker 2: destination already on his itinerary. Understanding the value of face
Speaker 2: to face interactions, Brennan seized the opportunity to visit Ovations
Speaker 2: in person, leveraging his persuasive skills, he managed to secure
Speaker 2: a meeting with the company's COO. With a blend of
Speaker 2: earnestness and determination, Brennan laid out the essence of his
Speaker 2: search was Ovations employing a man fitting the description of
Speaker 2: Michael Lee Jones, a towering figure well over three hundred
Speaker 2: pounds and distinctively bespectacled. This question sparked a crucial moment
Speaker 2: in Brennan's investigation. Unlike the other companies, which had promptly
Speaker 2: checked their records only to provide a straightforward denial, the
Speaker 2: executive at Ovations responded differently, Without even consulting a database,
Speaker 2: he set a barrier for any information to be shared. Brennan,
Speaker 2: lacking any law enforcement authority, would need a subpoena. This
Speaker 2: response stood out. It was a deviation from the norm
Speaker 2: that signaled to Brennan he might be onto something. Why
Speaker 2: would you want someone working for you who's a rapist,
Speaker 2: he challenged the COO, only to be met with the
Speaker 2: cold reality of procedural, legal and privacy concerns. Get a subpoena,
Speaker 2: the executive repeated. Brennan acted swiftly to obtain the necessary
Speaker 2: legal document. He reached out the Detective Foot at Miami Dade,
Speaker 2: who was quickly able to facilitate the issuance of a subpoena.
Speaker 2: Ovations promptly complied with the subpoena, and records revealed that
Speaker 2: they did indeed employ an individual matching the exact name
Speaker 2: and description Brennan had been tracing. Michael Lee Jones was
Speaker 2: currently working for them in Frederick, Maryland, standing behind the
Speaker 2: barbecue counter at Harry Grove Stadium, home of the Frederick Keys.
Speaker 2: Then a single, a minor league baseball affiliate of the
Speaker 2: Baltimore Orioles, was Michael Lee Jones. It was an early
Speaker 2: spring evening, and the chill of the Appalachian foothills left
Speaker 2: Detective Foot a Floridian through and through with chattering heath
Speaker 2: beneath his mustache. The call from Brennan had initially stirred
Speaker 2: a mix of admiration and skepticism in Foot. The lead
Speaker 2: on Jones, while unexpected, represented a significant breakthrough in the case,
Speaker 2: a departure from the many fruitless paths previously followed. Acknowledging
Speaker 2: the potential in Brennan's diligent work, Foot recognized the necessity
Speaker 2: of following through with the lead adhering to departmental protocol
Speaker 2: for out of town investigations, which necessitated a collaborative approach.
Speaker 2: Foot coordinated with a colleague who also headed toward the
Speaker 2: DC suburbs. Both men were ready to confront Jones, hoping
Speaker 2: to resolve the mystery that had long eluded them. Earlier
Speaker 2: that day before their visit, Foot had reached out to
Speaker 2: Michael Lee Jones to gauge his availability, Deliberately keeping the
Speaker 2: details sparse. He mentioned that he was looking into an
Speaker 2: incident tied to the Miami Boat Show, a time and
Speaker 2: place that Jones confirmed he was familiar with over the phone.
Speaker 2: Jones's demeanor was cooperative and polite, a stark contrast to
Speaker 2: what one might expect. He acknowledged his presence in Miami
Speaker 2: during the relevant period and agreed to meet, even providing
Speaker 2: directions to their meeting spot at the ballpark. Meeting with
Speaker 2: Jones in person, Foot and his partner discovered that his
Speaker 2: presence was as imposing as it was also unexpected. Jones
Speaker 2: stood tall, his stature commanding attention, with long arms, huge hands,
Speaker 2: and a noticeable round belly. Yet the expectation of encountering
Speaker 2: someone of a potentially menacing nature melted away with Jones's gentle,
Speaker 2: almost passive interaction. His soft spoken, amiable approach, accentuated by
Speaker 2: clear rimmed glasses, painted a picture far removed from any
Speaker 2: preconceived notions of intimidation, from any preconceived notions of a
Speaker 2: violent rapist. Jones, evidently the head of the food service operation,
Speaker 2: exuded a sense of respect and camaraderie among his team,
Speaker 2: a testament to his leadership and likability even in the
Speaker 2: bustling environment of the ballpark food counter. Clad in an
Speaker 2: apron symbolizing his role, he guided Foot and his partner
Speaker 2: to a more seclude picnic area for their discussion, away
Speaker 2: from the eyes and ears of his team and the public.
Speaker 2: In a detailed recounting of their conversation, Detective Foot remembered
Speaker 2: probing Jones about his interactions with women during the Miami
Speaker 2: Boat Show. Jones admitted to a single encounter, revealing a
Speaker 2: preference that set a distinct tone for the conversation. I
Speaker 2: only have sex with white women, he stated plainly. This
Speaker 2: admission opened the door to more specific inquiries from Foot,
Speaker 2: aiming to narrow down the possibilities and find any overlap
Speaker 2: with the case at hand. When asked directly about possible
Speaker 2: sexual liaisons at the Airport Regency, Jones's answer was a
Speaker 2: straightford denial. He clarified that the encounter in Miami involved
Speaker 2: a woman associated with the boat show, but that it
Speaker 2: had taken place elsewhere, distancing any direct connection to the hotel.
Speaker 2: Foot's questions became more pointed, seeking to match the victim's
Speaker 2: description any blond women. The answer was again negative. Further
Speaker 2: diverging from the details of the case. However, Jones provided
Speaker 2: a piece of information that added a new layer to
Speaker 2: his account, noting that the woman he met was German,
Speaker 2: a detail that stood out, albeit not aligning with the
Speaker 2: specifics of the case, although it doesn't seem too far
Speaker 2: fetched that someone might mistake a Ukrainian accent for a
Speaker 2: German one if they were unfamiliar with either. Under the
Speaker 2: cold evening sky Foot cut straight to the chase, feeling
Speaker 2: the weight of the investigation bearing down on him. Look,
Speaker 2: I've got a girl who was raped that week. Did
Speaker 2: you have anything to do with it? He pressed. Jones's
Speaker 2: reaction was of genuine shock. No, of course, not of course,
Speaker 2: not no way, he responded. He seemed appalled, his shock,
Speaker 2: echoing the seriousness of the accusation. Foot was undeterred and
Speaker 2: pushed further. You didn't beat the shit out of this
Speaker 2: girl and lever for dead in a field down there Again,
Speaker 2: Jones vehemently denied any involvement. Oh no, he said, no, no.
Speaker 2: The proposition of a DNA test was a litmus test
Speaker 2: for Foot. Are you willing to give me a DNA specimen?
Speaker 2: To which Jones agreed without hesitation to Foot. This readiness
Speaker 2: to cooperate seemed to signal innocence. After Jones consent that
Speaker 2: and provided the sample, Foot left Maryland, his mind nearly
Speaker 2: made up that Michael Lee Jones wasn't their man. Back
Speaker 2: in communication with Brennan, Foot expressed his doubts. I'm telling you, Ken,
Speaker 2: this ain't the guy. Brennan, however, was not swayed, maintaining
Speaker 2: a staunch belief in Jones's guilt. No, man, He's definitely
Speaker 2: the fucking guy. Driven by this conviction, Brennan himself visited Frederick,
Speaker 2: engaging Jones in conversations that yielded no confession or slip up.
Speaker 2: It wasn't until months later that the narrative took a
Speaker 2: dramatic turn. The DNA results had finally been processed, and
Speaker 2: they delivered a jarring verdict. Foots called a Brennan was
Speaker 2: both a concession and a revelation. You ain't gonna believe this,
Speaker 2: he began, setting the stage for the unexpected conclusion. You
Speaker 2: are right, I have a feeling, Brennan believed it. Jones's
Speaker 2: DNA had matched, solidifying his connection to the crime in
Speaker 2: a way that circumstantial evidence and denials could not contest.
Speaker 2: In October, Brennan traveled to Frederick to witness the culmination
Speaker 2: of the investigation Jones's arrest by Foot, eleven months after
Speaker 2: taking on the case. Foot charged Jones with serious offenses,
Speaker 2: including rape, kidnapping, and severely beating a young woman. In
Speaker 2: the interrogation room of the Frederick Police Department, Jones appeared
Speaker 2: an imposing figure, his large frame making the chair beneath
Speaker 2: him seem almost comically small. Despite his size, his denials
Speaker 2: were delivered in a surprisingly gentle voice, contrasting with the
Speaker 2: gravity of his situation. He vehemently denied the accusations with
Speaker 2: wide gestures, yet without showing anger, emphasizing his innocence. Jones
Speaker 2: insisted on his innocence, claiming he would never harm a woman.
Speaker 2: He described the victim as a hooker he had paid
Speaker 2: one hundred dollars to, maintaining that their interaction was consensual
Speaker 2: and she was unharmed, albeit intoxicated when he left. However,
Speaker 2: when presented with photos of the victim's battered face, Jones
Speaker 2: still stuck to his narrative, even as the DNA evidence
Speaker 2: incontrovertibly linked him to her. The stark evidence of injury
Speaker 2: e ange Jones's account, confronting him with the physical reality
Speaker 2: of the victim's condition, which sharply contradicted his claims of
Speaker 2: a harmless encounter. I did not hurt that girl, Jones asserted,
Speaker 2: recoiling from the photos presented to him as his voice
Speaker 2: escalated a note of desperation, crept in. I'm not violent.
Speaker 2: I never hit a fucking woman in my whole fucking life.
Speaker 2: I'm not gonna hurt her. Confronted by Brennan about the
Speaker 2: peculiar behavior of moving his suitcase to his car in
Speaker 2: the early hours, Jones offered a fragmented justification. I couldn't
Speaker 2: remember if we were leaving that day or the next day.
Speaker 2: I wasn't sure for some reason, so I thought, fuck it.
Speaker 2: Time to go. Brennan's interrogation revealed a discrepancy that momentarily
Speaker 2: caught Jones off guard. While Jones claimed his suitcase was
Speaker 2: filled with innocuous items like clothes, shoes, and a video game,
Speaker 2: Brennan pointed out that the effort it took to pull
Speaker 2: the suitcase off of the elevator hinted at a significant weight.
Speaker 2: Jones then hastily amended his account to include a quote
Speaker 2: large number of books unquote, citing his passion for reading. However,
Speaker 2: when pressed for details about his reading material, Jones faltered,
Speaker 2: unable to recall even a single title, a lapse that
Speaker 2: cast further doubt on his credibility and deepened the intrigue
Speaker 2: of what truly was contained within the suitcase. Jones's cooperative
Speaker 2: demeanor throughout the process played significantly in his favor, softening
Speaker 2: the impact of the damning DNA evidence against him. His
Speaker 2: previous arrest for soliciting a prostitute provided a plausible explanation
Speaker 2: for his reluctance to admit the transaction with the victim. Furthermore,
Speaker 2: his willingness to provide a DNA sample voluntarily could be
Speaker 2: interpreted by some as a sign of innocence, counteracting assumptions
Speaker 2: of guilt. The crux of the trial would likely pivot
Speaker 2: on the credibility of the testimonies Jones's word versus that
Speaker 2: of a young woman. However, the victim's effectiveness as a
Speaker 2: witness was compromised. Although she identified Jones from a line up,
Speaker 2: her hazy recollection of the events and the fact that
Speaker 2: she had seen Joeones previously, making his face familiar compared
Speaker 2: to the others in the lineup, diminished the reliability of
Speaker 2: her identification. Discrepancies between her account of the assault and
Speaker 2: the narrative constructed through Brennan's investigative efforts introduced further doubt.
Speaker 2: Even Detective Foot, initially skeptical of Brennan's single minded pursuit,
Speaker 2: began to question the veracity of the victim's story and
Speaker 2: light of the investigative findings. This confluence of factors, the
Speaker 2: victim's unreliable testimony, Jones's consistent cooperation, and the explanations for
Speaker 2: the DNA evidence muddied the waters of the case, challenging
Speaker 2: the straightforward narrative of guilt that seemed apparent at the
Speaker 2: investigation's outset. Ultimately, the legal proceedings in Miami culminated in
Speaker 2: a plea deal for Jones, who admitted to sexual assault
Speaker 2: in exchange for the dismissal of the graver charges, and
Speaker 2: he wound up with a relatively light sentence of two
Speaker 2: years in prison. For Brennan, who had tirelessly pursued Jones,
Speaker 2: believing firmly in his guilt beyond just this one incident,
Speaker 2: such an outcome was less than satisfactory, and once again,
Speaker 2: despite his frustration, Brennan's instincts were sound. The conclusion of
Speaker 2: this case was merely the beginning of a broader revelation
Speaker 2: regarding Jones's criminal activities. Brennan's conviction in Jones's pattern of behavior,
Speaker 2: rooted in the initial surveillance footage and reinforced by his
Speaker 2: personal interactions, remained unshaken. He saw Jones's actions not as isolated,
Speaker 2: but indicative of a serial predator's modus operendi. Brennan's observations
Speaker 2: and instincts led him to stress to detective foot the
Speaker 2: importance of entering Jones's DNA into the National database CODIS,
Speaker 2: the Combined DNA Index system. Brennan was confident that Jones's
Speaker 2: past would catch up with him through this tool. COTIS
Speaker 2: is a database managed by the FBI containing millions of
Speaker 2: DNA profiles from offenders and unsolved crime scenes, and it
Speaker 2: serves as a crucial resource in linking crimes across jurisdictions.
Speaker 2: The injury of Jones's DNA by the Miami Dade Police
Speaker 2: was a pivotal step. After the procedural verification by the FBI,
Speaker 2: Jones was linked to three additional cases, underscoring the efficacy
Speaker 2: of CODIS in bringing connections that might otherwise remain obscured
Speaker 2: by geographic and temporal distances, meaning the amount of time
Speaker 2: that had passed between events temporal distances. Linking Jones to
Speaker 2: three more cases validated Brennan's assertions about Jones's ongoing threat
Speaker 2: and demonstrated the essential role of DNA evidence in unveiling
Speaker 2: the broader scope of a criminal's activities. The matches found
Speaker 2: within CODIS not only shed light on Jones's history of violence,
Speaker 2: but also provided a measure of vindication for Brennan's unwavering
Speaker 2: pursuit of justice, illustrating that even when a case seems
Speaker 2: to reach a resolution, the story and the search for
Speaker 2: truth can continue to unfold. Revealing deeper layers of criminal
Speaker 2: behavior and the need for further justice. And we'll talk
Speaker 2: about that now as our scene shifts to an office
Speaker 2: in the Colorado Springs Police Department Sex Crimes Unit, where
Speaker 2: Detective Terry Thrumson was deeply troubled by an unresolved case.
Speaker 2: A blondhaired, blue eyed woman had endured a harrowing experience
Speaker 2: on December one, two thousand and five. She was offered
Speaker 2: a lift by a stranger, a large black man wearing glasses,
Speaker 2: who then manipulated his way into her apartment and assaulted her,
Speaker 2: muffling her cries with a forceful hand. For over two years,
Speaker 2: Thrumston grappled with a lack of leads, leaving the case
Speaker 2: in a standstill until a breakthrough occurred. DNA evidence collected
Speaker 2: from the victim was matched to Michael Lee Jones in
Speaker 2: New Orleans. The pattern of Jones's predatory behavior was echoed
Speaker 2: in the experiences of two other victims, underscoring the serial
Speaker 2: nature of his crimes. One victim recounted a knight in
Speaker 2: the French Quarter in two thousand three, where after seeking
Speaker 2: a calve, she was lured into a vehicle by a
Speaker 2: man fitting Jones's description, he took her to an isolated
Speaker 2: location and assault her, an act marked by violence and control,
Speaker 2: similar to the account from Colorado Springs. She fought back,
Speaker 2: managing to bite his palm during the attack. Despite her
Speaker 2: report and the collection of DNA evidence, her case also
Speaker 2: remained unresolved until the CODAS system identified Jones as the perpetrator.
Speaker 2: The second victim from New Orleans shared a narrative that
Speaker 2: paralleled the others, but was unable to positively identify Jones
Speaker 2: from a lineup. However, these three cases, connected by the
Speaker 2: thread of Jones's DNA revealed the grim reality of his
Speaker 2: actions across different states and years. The CODIS matches brought
Speaker 2: not only long awaited progress to stalled investigations, but also
Speaker 2: highlighted the importance of DNA evidence in linking crimes to
Speaker 2: perpetrators who might otherwise remain hidden in the shadows, eluding
Speaker 2: accountability for their heinous actions. Michael Lee Jones's movements across
Speaker 2: the United States culminated in a series of trials that
Speaker 2: tied together the grotesque narrative of his crimes, verified to
Speaker 2: have been in Colorado Springs and New Orcas during the
Speaker 2: time the assaults occurred, Jones faced extradition to Colorado Springs
Speaker 2: for trial as his sentence in Florida neared its end.
Speaker 2: The trial in Colorado Springs was unique due to the
Speaker 2: unfortunate death of the local victim, a circumstance that left
Speaker 2: Deputy District Attorney Ben Cecil without a key piece of testimony.
Speaker 2: In an innovative approach to prosecution, Cecil built his case
Speaker 2: around the pattern of behavior exhibited by Jones, Drawing on
Speaker 2: the experiences of victims from Miami and New Orleans. The
Speaker 2: courtroom became a convergence point for the narrative of Jones's
Speaker 2: widespread assaults. The Miami victim and one of the New
Speaker 2: Orleans victims took the stand not just to support the
Speaker 2: DNA evidence, but to identify Jones personally as their assailant.
Speaker 2: Their testimonies were integral to Cecil's argument, which highlighted a
Speaker 2: common plan, scheme or design in Jones's actions, a modus operendi,
Speaker 2: as identifiable as the DNA he left behind. The testimony
Speaker 2: of the New Orleans victim was particularly compelling, even years
Speaker 2: after the attack. Her recollection was vivid, her indignation palpable,
Speaker 2: underscoring the lasting impact of Jones's actions. Conversely, the Miami
Speaker 2: victim's testimony was less effective, hampered by inconsistencies in her
Speaker 2: account and language barriers which Jones's defense did not hesitate
Speaker 2: to exploit. This juxtaposition of witnesses illustrated the challenges of
Speaker 2: relying on personal testimony in court, where the strength of
Speaker 2: a case can hinge on clarity and credibility. Jones maintained
Speaker 2: his innocence in the face of the charges brought against
Speaker 2: him in Colorado, adopting a defense that the encounters had
Speaker 2: been consensual and labeling the accuser as a prostitute, a
Speaker 2: claim devoid of evidence and a pretty disgusting claim to
Speaker 2: make without any evidence, especially given that in this case
Speaker 2: the victim had tragically passed away. Jones's defense strategy did
Speaker 2: not involve him taking the stand. Instead, his attorneys voiced
Speaker 2: these arguments on his behalf. The jury, however, faced the
Speaker 2: challenging task of reconciling Jones's defense with the pattern of
Speaker 2: accusations against him. While the notion of two individuals in
Speaker 2: different states, under different circumstances accusing a man fitting Jones's
Speaker 2: distinctive description of assault could be seen as a coincidence.
Speaker 2: The introduction of a third similar accusation strained credibility. The
Speaker 2: jurors were presented with a scenario that defied simple explanations,
Speaker 2: especially in light of the absence of any substantiation for
Speaker 2: the claim that the victims were engaged in prostitution. Central
Speaker 2: to undermining Jones's defense was the irrefutable evidence provided by DNA.
Speaker 2: This scientific proof, combined with the improbable coincidence suggested by
Speaker 2: his defense, led the jurors to a conclusion that transcended
Speaker 2: the reasonable doubts Jones's lawyers sought to instill. The DNA
Speaker 2: acted not only as a link to each crime, but
Speaker 2: also as a testament to the pattern of behavior that
Speaker 2: Jones and his defense attempted to dismiss, anchoring the case
Speaker 2: against him in a reality that his narrative could not distort.
Speaker 2: Michael Lee Jones was convicted in twenty ten, and he
Speaker 2: is now now spending the expanse of his remaining years
Speaker 2: behind the walls of the Fremont Correctional Facility in Colorado.
Speaker 2: The consequence of his actions distilled into sentences that combined
Speaker 2: anchor him to a life in prison. The judgments passed
Speaker 2: twenty four years to life for sexual assault with force
Speaker 2: and an additional twelve years to life for felonious sexual
Speaker 2: contact demonstrate the severity of his crimes in legal terms.
Speaker 2: Thirty eight years old at the time of his conviction
Speaker 2: in twenty ten, Jones would now be fifty two, and
Speaker 2: his future is defined by the calendar of the penal system,
Speaker 2: with a parole hearing his soonest parole hearing on the
Speaker 2: horizon for twenty thirty two. This is the absolute earliest
Speaker 2: that Jones might argue for a life beyond prison. However,
Speaker 2: Colorado State still projects that Michael Lee Jones will be
Speaker 2: a permanent resident of the penal system until his death. Meanwhile,
Speaker 2: and I suppose, obviously, the repercussions of Jones's act actions
Speaker 2: extend beyond the confines of the correctional facility. His victim
Speaker 2: in Miami pursued justice through civil means, leading to a
Speaker 2: three hundred thousand dollars settlement with the hotel and its
Speaker 2: security company. The settlement, while it certainly cannot undo the
Speaker 2: trauma endured, serves as a tangible acknowledgment at least of
Speaker 2: the harm suffered and a reminder of the lasting impact
Speaker 2: of Jones's crimes. Back in Miami, Ken Brennan returned to
Speaker 2: his private detective work, carrying with him a deep sense
Speaker 2: of accomplishment from the Michael Lee Jones case. He is
Speaker 2: enormously proud, and understandably so, of the pivotal role he
Speaker 2: played in ensuring Jones's incarceration. Brennan, always confident in his
Speaker 2: investigative acumen, sees the convictions as just the beginning, saying
Speaker 2: at the time the cases they got on him, they're
Speaker 2: just the tip of the iceberg. Once other jurisdictions start
Speaker 2: checking their DNA files on cases when this guy was
Speaker 2: at large, I guarantee you they'll find some more. As
Speaker 2: we know, Ken Brennan's instincts have a pretty strong track
Speaker 2: rerend Now, in twenty and fifteen, while incarcerated, Michael Lee
Speaker 2: Jones pled guilty to the New Orleans rape charges. I'm
Speaker 2: not sure if any additional victims of his have been found.
Speaker 2: If anybody knows more, I'd love to know. Until next time,
Speaker 2: I'm Zevan Odelberg and this has been kind of murdery.
