Speaker 3: Kind of Murderies the Las Crucis Bowling Alley Massacre starts now.
Speaker 3: The call hits the fire department like any other at first,
Speaker 3: just another line lighting up, another voice on the other end,
Speaker 3: trying to get words out fast enough to keep up
Speaker 3: with what they're seeing. Smoke at the Bowling Alley. That's
Speaker 3: the message that gets through clean. Everything else comes in fragments.
Speaker 3: The dispatcher pins down the address, repeats it back, fingers
Speaker 3: already moving across the board, assigning units before the caller
Speaker 3: even finishes the second sentence. Engines are rolling out within seconds,
Speaker 3: midday traffic moving steady but not clogged, sirens cutting through it.
Speaker 3: As the first trucks turn in, they see it. Smoke
Speaker 3: pushing out of the building, not pouring out in a
Speaker 3: full column, but steady enough that you don't have to
Speaker 3: guess what you're dealing with. It's coming from inside, finding
Speaker 3: its way out through whatever gaps it can. The front
Speaker 3: of the Bowling Alley is still intact. No broken windows,
Speaker 3: no collapse, nothing that suggests the place is already given up.
Speaker 3: Just that slow, persistent push of smoke that tells you
Speaker 3: something's burning where it shouldn't be. The parking lot still
Speaker 3: has cars in it. It's the middle of the day business,
Speaker 3: open vehicles sitting where they were left, Nobody moving them,
Speaker 3: nobody pulling out. The first engine comes to a stop
Speaker 3: out front, the door's open, boots hit pavement, and the
Speaker 3: crew starts moving with the kind of pace that looks
Speaker 3: controlled from the outside but certainly isn't casual. They're on
Speaker 3: a mission. They're already reading the building before they get
Speaker 3: to it, watching the smoke, looking at the roof line,
Speaker 3: checking the doors and windows for any sign of where
Speaker 3: the fire's seated. The main entrance is still closed up,
Speaker 3: glass intact, no sign that anyone forced their way in
Speaker 3: or out. Smoke is collecting behind the glass, pressing up
Speaker 3: against the door, and then slipping out where it can.
Speaker 3: That tells the fire fighters that the fire's still inside,
Speaker 3: but it's getting bigger. They pull the line off the truck,
Speaker 3: drag it up to the entrance. One guy's feeding the hose,
Speaker 3: another flaking it so it doesn't kink. Someone's already reaching
Speaker 3: the door. Masks come up, straps are tightened down, air checked.
Speaker 3: No wasted motion, but nothing rushed either. You don't rush
Speaker 3: blind into a building you can't see through. The door
Speaker 3: gets opened, and smoke rolls out, thicker than it looked
Speaker 3: from the outside. It drops low spreads across the entryway,
Speaker 3: and for a second it pushes back against them before
Speaker 3: the air shifts and they move in. The line goes first,
Speaker 3: then the crew follows it, stepping over the threshold into
Speaker 3: a space that's already lost most of its visibility. Inside,
Speaker 3: the layout opens up, Bowling lanes stretch out into the dark.
Speaker 3: The front counters off to one side, seating scattered where
Speaker 3: people would have been sitting not long before. You can't
Speaker 3: see far, just shapes outlines the way the smoke hangs
Speaker 3: and moves when you step through it. The heat isn't
Speaker 3: sitting right at the entrance. It's there, but it's not concentrated.
Speaker 3: That tells the firefighters the fires deeper inside, further in
Speaker 3: past the front area, so they keep moving, staying low,
Speaker 3: following the hoses. It feeds in behind them, one hand
Speaker 3: on it, the other working the nozzle. Water comes on
Speaker 3: in short bursts as they advance, testing knocking back what
Speaker 3: they can reach, pushing toward where the heat picks up.
Speaker 3: Every step is deliberate. They're reading the floor under them,
Speaker 3: the air around them, adjusting. As they go outside. More
Speaker 3: units are pulling in, staging along the perimeter, setting up
Speaker 3: for back up lines and support from the street. It
Speaker 3: still looks like a contained fire. No one's coming out
Speaker 3: the front, no one's standing outside waiting to be helped. Inside,
Speaker 3: the first crew keeps moving forward into the smoke, closing
Speaker 3: the distance to wherever the fire is burning hardest. By
Speaker 3: the time the fire starts to give, the smoke inside
Speaker 3: the bowling alley thins out just enough for the crews
Speaker 3: to see past a few feet in front of them.
Speaker 3: Water has already been working the deeper part of the
Speaker 3: bowling alley, knocking down the heaviest heat. That heavy fist
Speaker 3: of hotness that was pushing back on them when they
Speaker 3: first stepped through the front doors has started to ease.
Speaker 3: It's still hot, still hanging in the air, but it's
Speaker 3: no longer the kind of heat that drives anyone out
Speaker 3: of the building. That's when the firefighters focus shifts, same movement,
Speaker 3: same pace, but now they're not just chasing the fire.
Speaker 3: They're seeing what the fire was hiding. The crew on
Speaker 3: the line keeps advancing, sweeping water across the floor, across
Speaker 3: the front counter, across anything that still shows heat behind them.
Speaker 3: Another team moves in, checking along the base of the counter,
Speaker 3: along the seating near the lanes, making sure nothing is
Speaker 3: burning underneath or behind, making sure that there's nothing that
Speaker 3: could flare back up. As the smoke lifts, the layout
Speaker 3: of the bowling alley comes back into view piece by piece.
Speaker 3: The front counter is the first thing that resolves clearly,
Speaker 3: the register area, the space where customers would have been standing.
Speaker 3: Beyond that, the seating along the lanes further back, the
Speaker 3: lanes themselves stretching out toward the rear wall. The outline
Speaker 3: sharpened as the air clears, and what the firefighters are
Speaker 3: moving through starts to look like a bowling alley again,
Speaker 3: not just a room filled with smoke. That's when they
Speaker 3: start finding people. It doesn't happen all at once. One
Speaker 3: firefighter moves past the counter and sees the first person
Speaker 3: on the floor near the front area. Another is found
Speaker 3: not far from the seating along the lanes. As they
Speaker 3: continue deeper, more come into view. They check each person
Speaker 3: as they come across them. That's automatic. Hands go to
Speaker 3: necks and wrists, checking for pulses, anything that tells them
Speaker 3: someone is still alive. But it becomes clear quickly that
Speaker 3: these people aren't getting up the positions of the bodies
Speaker 3: stands out. People aren't spread out the way you'd expect
Speaker 3: if this were only a fire. They're in specific spots
Speaker 3: inside the bowling alley, near the counter, along the seating
Speaker 3: further back toward the lanes. As visibility improves, those positions
Speaker 3: stay fixed, each one marking where that person was when
Speaker 3: everything stopped. The fire hasn't erase that. You can see
Speaker 3: where it burned and where it didn't. Sections of the
Speaker 3: floor are blackened. Parts of the counter show heat and
Speaker 3: smoke damage. Other areas the seating along the lanes, portions
Speaker 3: of the approach to the lanes are less affected. The
Speaker 3: pattern isn't uniform. More firefighters move through the bowling alley,
Speaker 3: now stepping around the counter, past the seating along the
Speaker 3: edge of the lanes. They're still calling things out, locations
Speaker 3: what they're seeing, short statements that carry across the space
Speaker 3: without slowing anyone down. Outside, additional units are staged, but
Speaker 3: the urgency is shifted. The fire itself is no longer
Speaker 3: the main problem. From the street, it looks like they've
Speaker 3: gotten control of it. Inside the bowling alley, the picture
Speaker 3: keeps filling in. Each section they clear shows more of
Speaker 3: the same, more people, same stillness. They're all dead, and
Speaker 3: there's no indication that anyone made it out once the
Speaker 3: fire started. By the time the main body of the
Speaker 3: fire is knocked down, the crews inside have seen enough
Speaker 3: to understand that this isn't just a fire that they're working.
Speaker 3: They don't stop. Water still goes where it needs to go.
Speaker 3: Hotspots are still checked along the floor and behind the counter.
Speaker 3: But the way they move now, how they look at
Speaker 3: what's in front of them, that's different, because at this
Speaker 3: point it's clear there's more inside the Bowling Alley than
Speaker 3: the fire that brought them through the door. Water is
Speaker 3: still running across the floor. When the first clear message
Speaker 3: comes out of the doorway, one of the firefighters steps outside,
Speaker 3: pulls his mask up toward his helmet, and leans toward
Speaker 3: the radio. He gives the address again, says the fire's
Speaker 3: been knocked down, then adds what they've found inside. There
Speaker 3: are people in there, several of them, and none of
Speaker 3: them are moving out. In the parking lot, the crews
Speaker 3: already staged here. It come through within a minute or two.
Speaker 3: Patrol cars start pulling in, easing around the engines, and
Speaker 3: the hose lines stretched across the asphalt doors open. Officers
Speaker 3: step out, and they start toward the front of the
Speaker 3: bowling alley, eyes already on the entrance. Smoke is still
Speaker 3: coming out through the doorway, thinner now but steady at
Speaker 3: the threshold. A firefighter comes out from inside and meets
Speaker 3: the police officers there. The exchange is quick, face to face,
Speaker 3: multiple victims, no signs of life, crews still working their
Speaker 3: way through the bowling alley. The officers don't go in.
Speaker 3: They stop at the doorway and look through instead. From
Speaker 3: where they're standing, the front counter cuts across their view,
Speaker 3: separating the entrance from the lanes behind it. Beyond that,
Speaker 3: as the smoke keeps lit, lifting, more of the bowling
Speaker 3: alley comes into focus, the seating along the lanes, the
Speaker 3: approach area, sections of the lanes themselves. One of the
Speaker 3: officers takes a step back and turns, raising his hand
Speaker 3: to the few people who've drifted closer than they should be.
Speaker 3: He walks them back toward the edge of the lot,
Speaker 3: putting more distance between them and the front doors. Another
Speaker 3: officer moves in the opposite direction, widening that space even further,
Speaker 3: making sure no one gets close enough to see inside.
Speaker 3: There's no crowd yet, just a handful of people who
Speaker 3: stopped when they saw the smoke and stayed when they
Speaker 3: heard the sirens. Inside the bowling alley, the firefighters keep
Speaker 3: moving forward. They step around the front counter, move past
Speaker 3: the seating along the lanes, and follow the edges of
Speaker 3: the lanes deeper into the building. As they move, they
Speaker 3: call out what they're finding, tying each location to something
Speaker 3: everyone inside recognizes front counter over here by the seating
Speaker 3: back near the lanes. Each call travels across the Bowling Alley,
Speaker 3: clear enough that no one has to ask where that
Speaker 3: is outside. More patrol cars arrive, taking positions along the
Speaker 3: edge of the lot. Radios stay active, passing the same
Speaker 3: information between officers. As supervisors come in, address number of
Speaker 3: people inside the fire. Nearly out, no one from law
Speaker 3: enforcement crosses the doorway. They hold there just outside, waiting
Speaker 3: for the firefighters to finish working through the bowling Alley
Speaker 3: before stepping in themselves. Once the fire is knocked down
Speaker 3: and the smoke lifts enough to see from the entrance
Speaker 3: to the lanes, firefighters move back through the bowling Alley,
Speaker 3: checking for any remaining hotspots. One crew works along the
Speaker 3: front counter. A firefighter runs a gloved hand across the countertop,
Speaker 3: then crouches and checks along the base where it meets
Speaker 3: the floor. He angles the nozzle down and puts a
Speaker 3: short stream of water along that scene, then shuts it
Speaker 3: off and feels along the same spot again before moving
Speaker 3: a few feet down and heating the process. Another crew
Speaker 3: moves along seating beside the lanes. They step from one
Speaker 3: seat to the next, bending down to look underneath, checking
Speaker 3: along the floor where debris collected. One firefighter lifts the
Speaker 3: edge of a seat, looks beneath it, then lowers it
Speaker 3: back into place, and moves on Along the approaches to
Speaker 3: the lanes. A firefighter walks the line where the flooring changes,
Speaker 3: stopping every few steps to check for heat. He places
Speaker 3: the nozzle close to the floor and runs a narrow
Speaker 3: stream across a darkened section, then cuts the water and
Speaker 3: watches the surface before stepping forward again. At the front doors,
Speaker 3: police investigators step inside. Once the firefighters clear a path,
Speaker 3: they move around the hose lines stretched across the floor
Speaker 3: and stop just past the entrance. From there, the front
Speaker 3: counter sits to the left. Seating runs along the lanes ahead,
Speaker 3: and the lanes extend toward the back of the bowling alley.
Speaker 3: One investigator walks to the front counter and leans over it,
Speaker 3: looking down at the floor behind it. Another stands a
Speaker 3: few feet back, scanning the same area from a wider angle.
Speaker 3: They step out from the counter into the open space
Speaker 3: between it and the lanes. Each dead body inside the
Speaker 3: bowling alley is left in place. The investigators walk around them,
Speaker 3: keeping distance, noting where each one is in relation to
Speaker 3: the counter, the seating, and the lanes. A camera is raised,
Speaker 3: photographs are taken from the entrance. The photographer steps forward,
Speaker 3: takes another set of photos closer to the counter, then
Speaker 3: moves along the same path the firefighters took, stopping at
Speaker 3: each position and taking additional shots. Near the base of
Speaker 3: the counter, one of the investigators kneels and points to
Speaker 3: a spent shell casing on the floor. A marker is
Speaker 3: set next to it, a photograph is taken. The casing
Speaker 3: is left where it is further back along the seating
Speaker 3: near the lanes, another casing is located on the floor
Speaker 3: beside a chair. It's marked the same way, photographed from
Speaker 3: multiple angles, and left in place. The police continue moving
Speaker 3: through the bowling alley, following the line of the lanes,
Speaker 3: stopping wherever something is found, Distances are measured from the
Speaker 3: counter to each casing, from the seating to the positions
Speaker 3: where people are found. Each measurement is called out and
Speaker 3: written down. In the area where the fire burned the most,
Speaker 3: investigators crouch and look at the floor. They follow the
Speaker 3: burn marks across the surface, tracing where the fire ran
Speaker 3: along the floor and where it stopped, noting how those
Speaker 3: areas line up with the rest of the bowling alley.
Speaker 3: Casings start coming off the floor one at a time.
Speaker 3: Near the front counter, a technician drops to one knee
Speaker 3: and leans in close before touching anything. He angles his
Speaker 3: flashlight across the tile, checking how the shell casing is sitting.
Speaker 3: Then he looks up long enough for the photographer to
Speaker 3: get one more shot. Only after that does he reach in,
Speaker 3: pinch the casing between his fingers and lift it straight
Speaker 3: up so it doesn't scrape across the floor. It goes
Speaker 3: into a small paper envelope the location called out before
Speaker 3: it's sealed. A few feet over, another shell comes up
Speaker 3: the same way, then another further back toward the seating
Speaker 3: along the lanes. They don't rush it. Each one gets
Speaker 3: the same treatment. Photograph, lift bag label, every step tied
Speaker 3: to where it was found in relation to the counter,
Speaker 3: the chairs, the lanes. The distances get called out as
Speaker 3: they go, numbers written down while the positions are still fresh.
Speaker 3: As more of them come in, the differences start to show.
Speaker 3: One of the casings from near the counter is held
Speaker 3: up beside one taken from the seating area. They don't match.
Speaker 3: One is wider at the base, the others narrower. The
Speaker 3: marks on the back where the firing pin struck don't
Speaker 3: line up the same way. They set those two down
Speaker 3: on separate evidence sheets. More come in same thing, some
Speaker 3: match each other, some don't. Before long, they've got them
Speaker 3: split into groups. Casings that share the same size and
Speaker 3: markings kept together, others set apart. Each group is tracked
Speaker 3: back to where it came from inside the bowling alley.
Speaker 3: Shell casings of different caliber tell investigators that more than
Speaker 3: one firearm was used in the crime. Once the casings
Speaker 3: are off the floor, they start looking at where the
Speaker 3: rounds ended up. Along the front counter. Small impact points
Speaker 3: show where bullets hit. The surface is chipped in tight
Speaker 3: clean spots, the edges darkened. Behind the counter. More impacts
Speaker 3: sit lower, closer to the floor, spaced out along the base.
Speaker 3: Each one gets photographed before anything else, A measuring tape
Speaker 3: comes out. One end goes to the floor, the other
Speaker 3: up to the impact point. The number gets called out,
Speaker 3: someone writes it down. Then they measure from the counter
Speaker 3: to the same spot, fixing it in the room out
Speaker 3: by the seating. Along the lanes, more impacts show up,
Speaker 3: one near the leg of a chair, another along the
Speaker 3: edge of the walkway. An investigator crouches there, looking from
Speaker 3: the floor up toward the counter, then back again, lining
Speaker 3: it up without touching anything. Further back along the approaches
Speaker 3: to the lanes, additional impacts appear, some low along the surface,
Speaker 3: others higher along the wood just beyond. Each one is marked, photographed,
Speaker 3: and measured. Nothing gets moved without that process being completed first.
Speaker 3: By the time they're done working through that stretch of
Speaker 3: the bowling alley, every casing in every impact point is
Speaker 3: tied to a position counter seating lanes with distances written down,
Speaker 3: so the whole thing can be laid back out later
Speaker 3: exactly the way it was found. Another investigator comes up
Speaker 3: beside him and looks at the same area. They don't
Speaker 3: touch it. One of them points tracing the edge of
Speaker 3: the darkened section in the air, then stands and calls
Speaker 3: for a photograph. The photographer steps in, takes a wide
Speaker 3: shot that captures the approach and the adjacent lanes, then
Speaker 3: moves closer and takes a second set focused on the
Speaker 3: dark area itself. A few feet away, closer to the
Speaker 3: walkway that runs behind the seating, a different investigator is
Speaker 3: working along the floor. He stops near a spot that
Speaker 3: hasn't been marked yet, crouches and angles his life light down.
Speaker 3: Something catches the beam. He leans in, looks for a second,
Speaker 3: then lifts his hand slightly to get the attention of
Speaker 3: the others. They come over one at a time. On
Speaker 3: the floor, just off the edge of the walkway sits
Speaker 3: another casing that hadn't been picked up in the earlier path.
Speaker 3: It's handled the same way as the others, photographed in place.
Speaker 3: A marker set beside it, then lifted carefully and sealed
Speaker 3: in its own envelope with the location called out. Near By,
Speaker 3: along the base of the seating, another area draws attention.
Speaker 3: The material along the lower edge shows heavier burn than
Speaker 3: the surrounding sections. One of the investigators crouches and looks
Speaker 3: along the base, following the line where the burn is strongest.
Speaker 3: He shifts a few inches at a time, tracking where
Speaker 3: it fades out and where it picks up again. He
Speaker 3: calls out for measurements. A tape is stretched from the
Speaker 3: seating to the edge of the burn, pattern the distance
Speaker 3: read aloud and written down. Another measurement is taken from
Speaker 3: the same point back toward the lane, fixing it within
Speaker 3: the space. They continue along that line, marking the start
Speaker 3: and end of the heavier burn, building out a clear
Speaker 3: picture of where the fire concentrated. Behind them, closer to
Speaker 3: the front of the bowling alley, other investigators are still
Speaker 3: working through the earlier areas, double checking positions, confirming measurements,
Speaker 3: making sure nothing was missed the first time through. In
Speaker 3: the back, the last section of the lanes and the
Speaker 3: surrounding floor are checked the same way as the rest.
Speaker 3: Lights angled low eyes moving across the surface, stopping wherever
Speaker 3: something stands out. When they reach the far end, there's
Speaker 3: nothing new to mark. They turn and walk back the
Speaker 3: way they came, following the same path through the bowling alley,
Speaker 3: stepping around the markers. The measured points and the area
Speaker 3: is already photographed. By then, most of the physical evidence
Speaker 3: inside has been identified, marked, and either documented in place
Speaker 3: or collected, each piece tied back to a specific point
Speaker 3: in the building. Across town, a sedan rolls to a
Speaker 3: stop and the hospital parking lot and idols for a
Speaker 3: second before the engine cuts The driver. Mid forties gray,
Speaker 3: starting at the temples tie, loosened and pulled slightly off center,
Speaker 3: sits there a moment with one hand still on the wheel.
Speaker 3: Then he reaches into his jacket, pulls out the folded
Speaker 3: slip of paper, checks the name again, and tucks it back.
Speaker 3: His partner is already out of the car by the
Speaker 3: time he steps on to the pavement. Late twenties sleeves
Speaker 3: rolled a small notebook in his hand that he hasn't
Speaker 3: opened yet. He shuts the passenger door with his hip
Speaker 3: and looks toward the entrance to the hospital. They head inside.
Speaker 3: The front desk is busy, phones ringing, a nurse speaking
Speaker 3: quietly to someone across the counter, Another staff member moving
Speaker 3: quickly with a chart tucked against her chest. The older
Speaker 3: detective steps up, shows his badge and gives the nurse
Speaker 3: a name, Melissa repass The nurse turns scans aboard behind her,
Speaker 3: then looks back. She's in surgery. The older detective nods once.
Speaker 3: What about the others from the sea. The nurse checks again,
Speaker 3: slower this time, Stephanie Sanak, she's stable, Ida Holgwin stable.
Speaker 3: Her fingers move down the list, Valerie Aran. She pauses,
Speaker 3: she didn't make it two years old. The younger detective
Speaker 3: lowers his eyes for a second, then looks back up,
Speaker 3: pens still cap in his hand. The older one doesn't
Speaker 3: react outwardly. Where can we find Sanak? The nurse points
Speaker 3: them down a hallway past a set of double doors.
Speaker 3: They move without saying anything else. The hallway is quieter,
Speaker 3: doors on both sides, some closed, some open just enough
Speaker 3: to show movement inside. Monitors sound off at regular intervals,
Speaker 3: steady and even. They find the room. An officer stands
Speaker 3: inside near the wall and steps back. When the detectives enter.
Speaker 3: Stephanie Sanak is propped up in bed, an IV in
Speaker 3: her arm, skin pale under the overhead light, but her
Speaker 3: eyes are open and tracking. The older detective steps to
Speaker 3: the foot of the ma'am. He says, voice low and even,
Speaker 3: I'm with the Los Crusus police. She nods faintly. I
Speaker 3: need you to tell me what happened inside the bowling alley?
Speaker 3: She takes a breath before she answers. Two men came in.
Speaker 3: The younger detective flips his notebook, open, pen moving, They
Speaker 3: had guns. What did they do? They told us to
Speaker 3: go into the office. How many of you seven? The
Speaker 3: younger detective writes that down underlines at once they walked
Speaker 3: us back there, she says, told us to get down.
Speaker 3: The older detective keeps his eyes on her, and then
Speaker 3: they started shooting. No pause, no change in tone, just

Speaker 3: She nods once, both hispanic, dark complexions. They spoke English.
Speaker 3: The younger detective writes each part down as she says it.
Speaker 3: The older one asks the next question, without raising his voice.
Speaker 3: After the shooting, what did they do? They went through
Speaker 3: the office looking for what money checks? Did they take anything? Yes?
Speaker 3: How much? I don't know? And after that, she shifts
Speaker 3: slightly against the pillow. They set the office on fire.
Speaker 3: The younger detective stops writing for a second, then adds it,
Speaker 3: where were you when they did that. The older one
Speaker 3: asks in the office. Did they say anything before they left?
Speaker 3: She shakes her head. They just left. The older detective
Speaker 3: stands there a moment, looking at her, then gives a
Speaker 3: single nod. That's enough for now. He doesn't press her further.
Speaker 3: They step back into the hallway. The younger detective closes
Speaker 3: the note book, presses the pen into the spiral. Two shooters,
Speaker 3: he says. The older one nods yeah. They start back
Speaker 3: toward the front of the hospital. Behind them, in another
Speaker 3: part of the building, a twelve year old girl is
Speaker 3: still in surgery after calling nine one one with multiple
Speaker 3: gunshot wounds. Ahead of them through the front doors, the
Speaker 3: parking lot is bright with morning light. Across town, the
Speaker 3: Bowling Alley sits under tape, the scene locked in place.
Speaker 3: Two men walked in. Seven people were taken into an office,
Speaker 3: then gunfire, money taken, fire set but Stephanie Sinak survived
Speaker 3: to tell the police about it. All right, We're gonna
